Nestled in the western Bergamo Alps, Valle Imagna stretches from the plains up to the high-altitude ridges that separate it from the Valsassina. Unlike other valleys, it features rolling hills and gentle mountain slopes, creating a unique landscape of terraced fields, vast meadows, and deep forests. The valley is also home to thermal springs, making it a wellness destination, particularly in Sant’Omobono Terme.
History and Cultural Heritage
Valle Imagna has a long history, with settlements dating back to the Lombard era. During the Middle Ages, it was a thriving agricultural and pastoral community, known for its skilled stone masons who built churches and palaces across Lombardy. Its villages, like Arnosto and Corna Imagna, still retain their characteristic medieval architecture, with stone houses, cobbled streets, and ancient churches that tell the story of a valley deeply rooted in tradition.
The Art of Cheese-Making
Thanks to its rich pastures and traditional transhumance practices, Valle Imagna has developed a strong cheesemaking tradition. The valley is renowned for Stracchino all’Antica, a soft, creamy cheese with an intense flavor, and Formaggella di Valle Imagna, a semi-hard cheese aged in mountain caves. Local dairy farms and mountain pastures offer visitors the chance to taste these artisanal cheeses, learning about the age-old methods that have been passed down through generations.
