Exploring Val Borlezza – A Hidden Valley of Alpine Charm and Cheese Tradition

Geography and Landscape

Val Borlezza is a lesser-known yet fascinating valley that connects the Seriana Valley with Valle Camonica. Characterized by deep forests, rolling hills, and alpine pastures, the valley is traversed by the Borlezza River, which has historically shaped both its landscape and its economy. Its proximity to Lake Iseo adds to its natural charm, making it an ideal retreat for hikers and nature lovers.

Val Borlezza has long been a key transit route between the Seriana and Camonica valleys, used by merchants and shepherds since ancient times. During the medieval period, it played a strategic role in regional trade, with evidence of fortifications and ancient settlements along its trails. The villages of Sovere and Bossico reflect this rich past, with well-preserved historical buildings, ancient churches, and traditions passed down through generations.

The fertile pastures of Val Borlezza have supported a strong cheese-making tradition for centuries. The valley is known for its Formaggella di Bossico, a semi-soft cheese aged in natural mountain caves, as well as other high-quality dairy products crafted using traditional methods. Many of the local farms and dairies still follow age-old cheesemaking practices, offering visitors a taste of authentic Bergamasca dairy excellence
