Exploring Adrara, Vigolo & Fonteno – Hidden Valleys of Alpine Traditions and Cheese

Geography and Landscape

Nestled between the Monte Bronzone and the Colli di San Fermo, the valleys of Adrara, Vigolo, and Fonteno form a picturesque landscape of rolling pastures, rugged mountains, and panoramic viewpoints. The valleys are shaped by the Guerna, Rino, and Zu Rivers, which have carved deep gorges and waterfalls along their courses. These secluded lands, rich in biodiversity, are ideal for hiking, cycling, and exploring the natural beauty of the Bergamo Alps.

Historically, these valleys were part of noble feudal domains and played a significant role in connecting the Bergamasque and Brescian territories. The villages of Adrara San Martino, Adrara San Rocco, and Vigolo boast ancient churches, medieval stone houses, and artisan traditions that have remained unchanged for centuries. Fonteno, perched above Lake Iseo, offers stunning views and a peaceful mountain retreat.

These valleys have long been a hub for artisan cheesemaking, thanks to their fertile pastures and ideal climate for dairy farming. The most renowned local cheese is Stracchino del Monte Bronzone, a soft and creamy delicacy aged in the mountain air. Formaggella di Vigolo is another regional favorite, with a mild yet flavorful taste. Visitors can explore local dairies and mountain farms to experience the cheesemaking process and taste these authentic Lombard specialties.
